David Kramers Breyani

From 21 October 2011
Baxter Theatre

A musical comedy written & directed by David Kramer

starring Marc Lottering, Christo Davids, Alistair Izobell, Abduraghman Adams, Jill Middelkop, Terry Hector & Larissa Hughes

David Kramer has written a musical comedy based on one of Marc Lottering's most lovable characters, Smiley. Christo Davids plays Fuad, his brother, and the audience follows their adventures as they try and escape from Big Bucks, a perlemoen smokkelaar. They need Inspector Mercia Meintjies's help to get away as they move between Grassy Park and the Waterfront, Woodstock and Wynberg. It's fast, it's funny, and it's on stage in Cape Town this summer!

In 2003 this concert at the Baxter Theatre in Cape Town was captured on film and is now being released on DVD for the first time in its entirety. The concert is a jaw dropping celebration of eccentric and long forgotten guitar, ramkie and rural singing styles. Held together by David's typically wry and insightful narration and a brace of new songs inspired by his travels through South Africa's outback.

The show features the amazing abilities of teaspoon slide guitarist, Hannes Coetzee and the eccentric one-handed guitar style of Tokas Lodewyk. Violinists Dawid van Rooi and Jan Willems perform the !Khapara music on their homemade instruments. Singing plaintiff songs from the Karoo are the Mouers family with Siena Mouers on her uniquely tuned guitar and her brother Koos Lof on his upside down piano accordian.

Here is a rare opportunity to hear the music that is fast disappearing from the landscape by the original musicians. Siena Mouers, Jan Mouers, Koos Lof, Helena Nuwegeld, Dawid van Rooi and Jan Willems have all died since the recording of this show. Now for the first time one of these legendary concerts is being made available to the public and also the first time that David Kramer’s performance of songs he wrote especially for the production is captured on DVD.

David is joined on stage by his band's longtime lead guitar virtuoso Gammie Lakay, bass guitarist Howard Links and Danny Petersen on drums.
